The ERP knows what to build, what materials to order, what to ship, and what to invoice. What it does not know, in any useful detail, is what is actually happening on the shop floor right now: which unit is at which station, which fastener was torqued to what value, which lot of material went into which assembly, which operator built which unit, and which units shipped on which truck.
